MANTECA - a legendary band is re-launched
Monday 15 November at PJS
I Am delighted to inform you that the PJS will be presenting the relaunch of the legendary jazz fusion big band, Manteca, lead by Uwe Stengel on Monday 15 November 2010. Manteca, had an ABCTV Television series and recorded two albums for the ABC .
Uwe Stengel was winner - 'Perth Jazz Society - Outstanding Individual Contribution to Jazz 2009’.
In the 1970’s many young people had their first taste of live jazz through the award-winning fusion band ‘Manteca’, formed and lead by Uwe who arranged music, and played flute and sax. A national ABC 10-part series followed, entitled ‘Manteca in Concert’. Uwe’s belief in nurturing young jazz talent helped lay the seeds for music courses at WAAPA in the early 80’s, when he was president of the Music Arrangers’ Guild.
This was followed by an influential career in secondary school jazz education, setting up the first School Jazz Education programme in WA at CBC in Fremantle, where his passion infused into many a young student over the years, and blossomed into the strong and wide-ranging jazz community that we see in WA today.

SMARTER THAN SMOKING HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ WORKSHOPS
1. The Smarter Than Smoking jazz workshop hosted by Wesley College on Tuesday 27 July was most successful. Mat Jodrell (trumpet) and Pete Jeavons (bass) really had the boys working as they tutored them in the 'groove' of jazz. The workshop went for nearly 2 hours as the boys listened to a couple of pieces performed by Mat and Pete and then had to individually practice all the exercises put to them. The workshop concluded with a great blues jam where each player had to take numerous solos.
A great day and appreciated by the boys. As Kieran Hurley of Wesley said... The student reaction to the to the workshop was universally positive. The students loved the enthusiasm with which both Matt and Pete spoke of music (and jazz in particular) and also loved the fact that neither presenter seemed to speak down to, or patronize them. All levels were catered for and every student was made to feel that their contribution mattered. Great to have the shared performance/jam nature of the workshop!
2. JOHN CURTIN COLLEGE of the ARTS
Workshop held on Wednesday 11 August by MATT BRUBECK & DAVID BRAID (CANADA) in front of 50+ students with 12 in the ensemble.
Very positive feedback from students at all levels - fascinated by a different use of the cello, heard the message that a skill like that is only achieved through much practice, loved the analogy of the storeys in houses for the forms in jazz, interested in some of the unusual harmonic progressions in the compositions they performed. Jo Sheridan
3. BUSSELTON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Workshop on Wednesday 18 August by THE FIX - Chris Foster, Ricki Malet, Matt Willis, Ben Falle.
Again 50+ students. An ensemble of 3 were taught a blues piece aurally! Ricki really made them work and then they were led thru improvisation skills. 13 piece Jazz Band 1 played and after coaching, 8 students had a turn at solos. A very well prepared workshop which ran for nearly 2 hours. Great value for money for the school!

HELEN MATTHEWS & RAY WALKER: "A Slight Diversion" - self release
by Ian Macgregor and Garry Lee
1. I Keep Going Back to Joe’s 2. Watch What Happens 3. Moanin’ 4. Witchita Lineman 5. Stars 6. Beautiful Love 7. Troy’s Song 8. I Wish You Love 9. All in the Game. 10. Someone To Watch Over Me.
Ray Walker (g) Helen Matthews (voc) Karl Florisson (b) Carl Mackey (t/s tracks 3 & 5) Gary Ridge (perc tracks 2,3,4 & 5) Sophie Walker (cello tracks 7 & 9) Jessica Gethin (violin track 4)
Recorded 2009-2010 Perth, Western Australia & Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, SA (Time 47 mins).
Ray Walker and Helen Matthews have known each other and worked together professionally for the past 48 years, so this CD just had to happen. Both Helen and Ray have been icons of the Perth jazz scene for all those years not just for their performances but as mentors to the vast majority of Perth jazz musicians. Ray has lectured in jazz guitar at the Conservatorium for 26 years, Helen has also had stints teaching there as well as organising events like the Bunbury and Fremantle International Jazz Festivals, also a long association with the Perth Jazz Society.
This new CD reflects their wide musical tastes and starts with a little known tune originally recorded by Nat “King” Cole, “I Keep Going Back To Joe’s”, which has a bluesy feel to it. One of the delights of this CD is the clever arrangements by Ray, “Watch What Happens” is one such tune, with an unusual beginning before going into normal tempo. Good scatting on this one by Helen, and nice to hear the percussion of Gary Ridge an original member of their group “A Slight Diversion” and now resident in Brazil. Bobby Timmon’s “Moanin” begins and ends with a “moanin” narrative by Helen, a great arrangement by Ray with Carl Mackey added on tenor sax. A fine interpretation of Glen Campbell’s “Witchita Lineman” follows with the addition of Ray’s daughter Jessica Gethin on violin and Helen singing from the heart. “Stars” is a rarely heard bossa nova with Ray on nylon string. “Beautiful Love” is a duet which opens with a lush introduction by Ray on his ES175 before being joined by Helen. Bassist Karl Florisson comes in when Ray solos. “Troy’s Song” was written by local saxophonist Troy Roberts with lyrics by Helen and on this track Ray’s other daughter Sophie Walker plays a flawless solo on cello. On Charles Trenet’s “I Wish You Love”, being a French tune Ray chose to use a Saga Maccaferri gypsy guitar to great effect. His solo on this tune is one of the CD’s highlights. He double tracks, playing his own rhythm as he does on a number of other tracks. “All in the Game” originally recorded by Tommy Edwards in the late 50’s and also covered by Glen Campbell, Cliff Richard and George Benson is a great tune with another fine solo from Sophie Walker. The album ends with a duet on Gershwin’s “Someone To Watch Over Me”, one of the CD’s best tracks.
When I first arrived in Perth in 1981 I asked someone where I could hear some good jazz and was directed to the old Highway Hotel on Stirling Hwy in Nedlands. The group playing there was “A Slight Diversion” with Helen, Ray, Brian Bursey on bass and Gary Ridge on drums. This was a great introduction to jazz in Perth and that venue was always packed every Sunday afternoon. Both Ray and Helen have been under recorded over the years and this new CD is a fine testament to their talent and longevity on the Perth jazz scene.

Review - Tom's Trio Sizzles the Senses
By Uwe Stengel
Take three world class jazz musicians, some challenging innovative ideas, a healthy dose of creative interaction and you have the Tom O'Halloran Trio. The PJS can be justifiably proud, to be able to present jazz groups of this caliber. The music was fresh, exciting and unpredictable. With Tom O'Halloran on piano, Pete Jeavons on bass and Daniel Susnjar on drums, we have come to expect the un-expected and last Monday night was no exception.
This performance had a distinctly modern European flavour with lots of creative interaction and abstract grooves, yet it was the unmistakably original home-grown music of Tom O'Halloran. The warm and enthusiastic audience was highly rewarded for coming out on a chilly night, to listen to this great and exiting trio, performing creative modern jazz at it's highest level.
